About us

In 1954, UNHCR won the Nobel Peace Prize for its groundbreaking work in Europe. But it was not long before we faced our next major emergency.
In 1956, during the Hungarian Revolution, 200,000 fled to neighbouring Austria. Recognising the Hungarians as 'prima facie' refugees, UNHCR led efforts to resettle them. This uprising and its aftermath shaped the way humanitarian organisations would deal with refugee crises in the future.

Ecuador has the largest refugee population in Latin America, most of them people fleeing from the internal armed conflict in the neighbouring Colombia. As of September 2015 the Ecuadorian Government had recognized more than 60,000 refugees in Ecuador, 60 per cent of them live in urban areas while most of the remaining 40 per cent stay near the border in remote areas, with scarce development, limited basic services and little infrastructure. UNHCR has offices in Quito, Esmeraldas, Carchi, Sucumbíos, and Guayaquil provinces. It is important to note that, the language of the office and direct work and daily contact with refugees is in Spanish, so an excellent working knowledge of Spanish is required.

About

When the founders of the World Resources Institute (WRI) created the organization in 1982, they were responding to an urgent demand. Environmental concerns that emerged forcefully in the 1960s and 1970s—deforestation, desertification, and climate change – were not being sufficiently addressed. These complex, global issues posed unprecedented policy and political challenges. WRI’s founders saw a clear need for an organization that could address the interdependent interests of man and nature.
